Steps towards an integrated eco-economy: The case of Randers, Denmark

Publikation: KonferencebidragPaperForskning

Twenty years ago, the Danish city Randers still suffered from the effects of an economic restructuring process, which had closed many of the traditional industries of the city. In many ways, the challenge for the city of Randers was to reinvent itself. Today, an overall renaissance of the city is well on the way. An important factor in the renaissance of Randers has been the project Randers Rainforest (RR). RR is a tropical zoo, which consists of an indoor exhibition within three domes, as well as an outdoor exhibition which includes
the neighbouring meadows adjacent to the River Guden Since the heyday of RR in 1996, the enterprise has been an active part in creating and facilitating a multidimensional project space which combines experience economy, nature conservation, biodiversity enhancement, environmental regulation services, rural and landscape management, food networks. The developments in Randers
constitutes a case of an integrated rural and urban eco-economy, which transcends established borders between public and private organisations, private and community enterprise and between rural and urban spatial development.
