Abstract

We introduce the concept of ‘status entrepreneurship,’ which we define as the dimension of entrepreneurial activity oriented towards acquisition of symbolic capital. This concept is grounded in the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu which posits that social life is a competitive struggle for position, waged through the accumulation of various forms of capital, including symbolic capital—the prestige and recognition conferred by audiences that arbitrate status. Our framing thus treats status not as a mere byproduct of entrepreneurial success or a resource for the venture, but as a strategic goal in itself. The venture becomes a stage for performing a celebrated identity, where a primary output is the founder's enhanced social standing. While this status-seeking dynamic can be a dimension of any entrepreneurial endeavor, our framework is most focused on instances where it is a primary driver. For founders who orient their ventures principally around this goal, we deploy the analytical shorthand of ‘status entrepreneurs’.
