Abstract

In the years 1666-72, a new pleasure palace, Sophie Amalienborg, was built in Copenhagen by Sophie Amalie of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (1628-85), queen consort of king Frederik III (ruled 1648-70). After the king’s death, the palace served as residence for the dowager queen. This article examines six tapestry series recorded in a probate inventory drawn up at the palace in 1685. Relying on additional archival studies, attempts are made to determine the provenance of the tapestries, describe their iconography, and chart their later fate. Furthermore, it is argued that a number of the tapestries may still be preserved.
