Abstract
Is John Davies of Hereford a source for Shakespeare’s description of the Field of Cloth of Gold in Shakespeare and Fletcher’s Henry VIII? Davies long poem commemorating the Royal visit of Christian IV of Denmark to the court of James the VI and I in July 1606, Bien Venu: Greate Britaines Welcome to Hir Greate Friends, and Deere Brethren The Danes (2STC 6329), offers enough significant parallels both thematic and structural that it should be seen likely providing material utilized by Shakespeare when he came to describe the earlier meeting of kings between Henry VIII and Francis I of France in 1520.
