Abstract
Overall, the report highlights the Research Programme of Anthropology (RPA)'s achievements, identifies areas for improvement, and outlines strategies for future development, emphasizing the importance of impactful research, talent development, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
1.0 Publications
Between 2018 and 2023, the RPA produced 803 publications, with an average of 2-3 papers per member annually. The majority were research works (84%), with peer-reviewed journal ar-ticles and book chapters being the most common types, but also publishing in many other for-mats. The programme's publications have made significant academic impact, covered various interdisciplinary themes, and responded to emerging challenges. Looking forward, the pro-gramme aims to enhance strategic publication efforts and diversify dissemination formats.
2.0 Research Ideas and Application Patterns
The RPA has shown high productivity in grant applications, with a 66% success rate based on registered applications and DKK 129 million funding secured over the last five years. Collabo-rative and interdisciplinary projects have thrived, enhancing societal relevance and innova-tion. However, constraints on buy-out time pose a challenge, limiting dedicated research and writing time. This issue, often overlooked, is a concern raised by many within the department. Additionally, grant scope limitations within Denmark and difficulties in networking without sta-ble travel funds present further challenges. Going forward, the program aims to improve net-working, broaden grant applications, foster collaboration, and advocate for uninterrupted re-search time.
3.0 Societal and Political Impact
The RPA's collaborative research efforts have led to impactful engagements with various stakeholders, including public and private sectors in Denmark. Research projects have influ-enced policy, contributed to public discourse, and provided valuable learning experiences for students. Despite achievements, there's a need for better recognition of non-traditional dissem-ination efforts and improved organizational support for collaborations. Moreover, there is a need to encourage work outside the traditional areas of research and intervention marked by Danish funding bodies. RPA members have a great deal to contribute not only within Danish society, but also in the places where they do their research.
4.0 Talent Development and Merit
The RPA excels in attracting talented PhD candidates and providing support for their develop-ment. However, there are concerns about the adequacy of guidance for PhD prospects and the support provided to postdocs, especially regarding career planning and integration. Addi-tionally, efforts to promote diversity and fair recruitment practices are highlighted as areas for improvement.
5.0 Interdisciplinarity
Anthropology's inherent interdisciplinary nature has been extended through path-breaking work in the programme's collaborative projects and engagement with diverse fields. While there are opportunities for expanding interdisciplinary collaborations, barriers such as differing evaluation criteria and organizational structures pose challenges. Recommendations include increasing awareness of funding opportunities and optimizing internal structures to facilitate collaboration.
