School health education and promotion: current approaches and critical perspectives : part 2

Purpose - This Special Issue is the second in a series that aims to place the spotlight on educational research and its contribution to the field of school-based health and wellbeing promotion. The purpose of both special issues is to bring together scholars from across the world to consider current developments in research on curricula, interventions, policies and practices concerning health education and promotion and related professional development of teachers.
Design/methodology/approach – As in the first Special Issue published in 2017 (School health education and promotion: Health Education, 117, 5), members of the European Educational Research Association (EERA) Network on Health Education Research (Network 8, Research on Health Education) were invited to submit their conceptual or empirical work that critically engages with processes and outcomes in school health education and wellbeing promotion. Additionally, an open call for papers was published on the Health Education website and on the EERA website. There was considerable interest from those such as researchers, scholars and practitioners, and as a result, we have been able to publish a second Special Issue.
Findings - The six papers in the special issue draw from a range of critical perspectives to engage with questions of school health education and health promotion, from conceptual historical analyses, to teachers’ views on criticality, to issues of race and culture, to critical sexuality education, and to emotional wellbeing and health literacy.
Originality/value - The second collection of papers offers important new insights into diverse forms of critical research related to health and wellbeing education and promotion practices in different educational and sociopolitical contexts, which can offer valuable inspiration for further research and practice development.
