This book is a careful scientific edition of the old findings from the famous castle of Tannenberg, close to Darmstadt in Southern Hesse. The castle had been destroyed in 1399 and is one of the earliest known sieges using fire arms. Moreover its excavation, which took place in 1849 and was published in 1850 by von Hefner-Alteneck and Wolf, is a milestone of medieaval archaeology and castellology too.
Astrid Schmitt's study confirms the historical known closing date of 21th of July 1399, when the castle was demolished. The edition is focussed on the material culture, especially as far as ceramics are concerned.
It would be useful to publish the archaeological contexts and the building structures of the old excavation from 1849 and the recent ones as well, which did Norbert Wand until 2001, in near future.
