Rethinking educational comparison under the conditions of globalisation

The paper re-considers theoretically educational comparison through a discussion and critique of existing approaches.
It starts from the premises that education is a trans-historical institution, since all societies transmit knowledge to their new generations, but also specific to each society, as each society gives a particular form to knowledge transmission. The latter can take place through designated institutions (e.g. state education system) but also across social institutions. Societies have their own history and thus they present their own fundamental alterity and singularity, expressed in the creation and transformation of institutions. To approach, therefore, the society in question, the paper suggests, one should approach its dynamic flux of social meanings embodied in its institutions, education being one of them.
