    Abstract

Enzymes are typically the catalyst of choice when high atom efficiency and high selectivity are desired. However, the use of enzymes for organic synthesis represents a multiparameter challenge. Development of efficient enzymatic reactions necessitates careful evaluation of three parameters: (i) reaction of interest (solubility of substrates/products, reaction medium, thermodynamic equilibrium), (ii) biocatalyst (activity, stability, substrate/product inhibition), and (iii) process (catalyst preparation, reactor type, operation mode). This chapter focuses on these parameters as well as assessment of criteria to be considered for the application of enzymes in an industrial environment.
