Abstract

In Per Anker Jensen (2012) (and many others analyses), constituents of the type [den gamle fregat] 'the old frigate', [nedrivningen af stationen] 'the demolishing of the station', [Ebeltofts butikker] 'Ebeltoft's shops' og [dem] 'them' are all analysed as noun phrases (NP). I will assume that an NP does not comprise determiners (e.g. articles or demonstrative pronouns). Instead I will suggest that [den gamle fregat] 'the old frigate' is built up around the determiner position, i.e. that it is a "determiner phrase" (DP), and that this DP then contains the NP [gamle fregat] 'old frigate'.

This has consequences for the analysis of genitive expressions, such as [Ebeltofts butikker] 'Ebeltoft's shops', and here I diasgree with Jensen's (2012) analysis, which takes [Ebeltofts] 'Ebeltoft's' as a genitive phrase (GP). I will instead assume that [Ebeltoft] is in the specifier position in DP, and that [-s] is in the head position D. The paper discusses the difference between the two analyses, illustrated by examples from (Eastern) Standard Danish, West Jutland Danish, Southern German and Northern Norwegian.
