The aim of this doctoral study is to generate knowledge on how the digital payments ecosystem in India can be (re)designed to benefit the poor. This is not to say that that digital money offers the best solution to drivers' financial problems. Rather, choosing to use cash for financial transactions is different from an inevitable dependence on cash. This study, therefore, situates digital payments within the broader ecosystem of financial practices and 'acceptance network' of digital (card or mobile-based) money. It shows how different parts of the ecosystem are shaped by practices of the poor and need to be integrated for digital payments to be usable and beneficial for the poor in substantive terms.
