Abstract
This research examines LGBTQIA+ activism as part of the Philippines’ political youth movements and details how UP Babaylan, a recognized citizen’s group, has been actively maximizing Facebook and Twitter as spaces that push for the social acceptability of LGBTQIA+ by anchoring their platforms’ discourses on the central principle of human rights. Our research focuses on UP Babaylan’s framing of LGBTQIA+ rights in their online discourse-by positioning the LGBTQIA+ as a distinct community while arguing that such distinctiveness should neither discriminate nor consign them to the margins; and by utilizing provocative rhetoric that challenges public consciousness while, at the same time, advocating for freedom and equality.
