Objective Audiometry using Ear-EEG

Hearing provides vital information about the surrounding environment and so sound detection and auditory perception are utilized to communicate, navigate and avoid dangers. Therefore, hearing loss has severe implications on both functional and social aspects of the affected individuals´ life. The use of hearing aids to some extent relieves hearing loss and thereby improves the quality of life for hearing impaired and their relatives. It is however crucial that the hearing aids are fitted in accordance with the hearing abilities of the individual user to function in a satisfying manner.
Recently, a novel EEG-method called ear-EEG that enable recording of auditory evoked potentials from a personalized earpiece was introduced. Since ear-EEG provides a discrete and non-invasive way of measuring neural signals and can be integrated into hearing aids, it has great potential for use in everyday life. Ear-EEG may therefore be an enabling technology for objective audiometry out of the clinic, allowing regularly fitting of the hearing aids to be made by the users in their everyday life environment. In this study we investigate the application of ear-EEG in objective audiometry.
