Abstract

Nebular Epistemics: A Glossary (Scholarship Like a Spider or Spit) is a video essay which uses the mode of the illustrated lecture to sketch an epistemics for constraint-based videographic criticism. Though the mode deployed is ostensibly argumentative, even explanatory, the video essay is composed in a modernist idiom, meaning that the ‘presenter’ may not be entirely reliable, or the account entirely sincere. It falls to the spectator to discern and recompose the strands of the argument, as the video essay indicates with a quote from Adorno, who suggests that the essay is a form in which «the thinker does not actually think but rather makes himself into an arena for intellectual experience».
The video essay was nominated as one of the best of the year in the Sight and Sound poll of 2023.
