Abstract

The chapter analyzes and discusses reading of digital audiobooks as a multisensory experience and practice. Audio reading is widely misunderstood as mono-sensory; however, it decidedly affords multisensory reading by setting the eyes and body free to move. Hence, tactile, kinesthetic, visual, and audio input mutually affect one another and influence the reading experience. The chapter first describes the specifics of audio reading, which are very different from visual reading. In the sections that follow, focus is on the various haptic and tactile experiences that audiobook reading may afford, explained by the materiality and haptics of the technology and the intimate and social aspects of listening to the voice of the performing narrator.
