In this article we investigate the location of burial mounds at the scale of the Yambol province. We digitize potential mound locations from Soviet topographic maps and confirm nearly 900 specimen as archaeological monuments in available satellite imagery, existing TRAP field survey datasets, and through limited field visits. We use two digital terrain models, supplied by ASTER and SRTM sensors respectively, and a vector dataset of rivers to extract mound environmental settings, represented by elevation, slope, aspect and proximity to water. We contrast the frequencies of mounds in different environmental bands with the background values for the Yambol province in order to compare how much the observed mound settings deviate from a random distribution across the landscape. The analysis shows that past mound-builders preferred elevations below 200 masl with low gradient, exposed to north and westerly directions, within 400 m of local water sources.
