N2 - This chapter deals with local government finance. It contains a separate but parallel description of local finance in each country and a common summary. The country descriptions are parallel in the way they are organized: following a brief general introduction, local revenues and tasks are presented before local expenditures are discussed. Also the empirical evidence for both countries refers to the same year, 1983. This similarity in treatment should make it easier to compare one country with another.
