Abstract
This paper investigates the role of digital twins in line manufacturing
equipment implementation and change processes, addressing gaps in academic
research on success and failure. Focusing on Industry 4.0, the study explores
whether digital twins are sufficient or additional perspectives are needed for
improving the implementation. It identifies challenges in contemporary academic
investigations and emphasizes the scope of implementation issues, including
quality, capability risks, and infrastructural elements. The paper presents cases
from diverse industries, revealing challenges in the implementation process
despite virtual commissioning. This indicates contrasting views related to the
limitations of digital twins. The findings highlight the need for a more holistic
research approach considering human, infrastructural, and operational elements
in line manufacturing implementation. A proposed research agenda aims to
enhance understanding and effectiveness in implementing production line
equipment, emphasizing a balanced view hybridizing technological and
economic, operational, and organizational factors for a first-time-right
implementation thinking.
