Abstract

This work reports on the impact of germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) lamps with a peak emission at 222 nm (GUV222) on indoor air constituents in real indoor environments. Investigations include continuous monitoring of ozone (O3), airborne particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in three offices with varying occupancy. Operation of the GUV222 lamp was found to increase office O3 concentrations and occasionally induce increased ultrafine particle (UFP) levels. In addition, the study reports changes in both the composition and concentrations of VOCs from office and human emanations indicative of reactive chemistry as a result of lamp operation.
