Abstract

This study looks at patients’ perspectives inside diagnostic imaging examination spaces aiming to show how imaging technologies not just produce quantifiable data; they also produce trust, aiding patients’ existential responses to being situated in the examination context. We investigate hope and time as existential components in diagnostic procedures with patients as liminal beings: In-between healthy and (not) having cancer.
The article is based on a qualitative study of patients in a Danish Fast Track Cancer Referral Program. We conducted participatory observations and 18 semi-structured interviews with 15 patients (age range = 31-77 years) in three radiological wards. The purpose was to learn about their illness experience through diagnostic imaging procedures and how imaging technologies might actively co-constitute their experiences in an unsettled space. The aim is to create novel empirical insights regarding patients' experiences with diagnostic imaging practice.
