Abstract
Cities tend to grow over time and more and more rural land around large cities and undeveloped zones within city boarders are being urbanized to house the increasing population. The densification can pose some challenges in the treatment of environmental noise. Building sites are bothersome for residents in the neighborhood, and the increasing number of inhabitants calls for more public transportation in the form of light rails, busses and etc. Undeveloped zones are often buffer zones around railways or trafficated roads where an acceptable level of environmental noise is hard to achieve. In this paper a holistic design method for urban acoustic environment is introduced. The method is intended to be used at the earliest design stages to inform fundamental decisions regarding the design and planning of urban areas. The framework and measurement scale for the new method is adapted from soundscape research. The framework includes various design criteria including both subjective and objective parameters. The measurement scale indicates the soundscape character of the respective design solution. A simple visualization method is proposed, making it possible to easily communicate results to non-practitioners with integration in BIM. Finally, Multi Criteria Decision Making methods are used to value and weigh each criterion and measure the soundscape character.Grant: The research was carried out in the framework of the project "Urban Tranquility" under the Intereg V programme.
