Healthcare technology and telemonitoring: Overcoming barriers to collaboration between healthcare contexts

Citizens suffering from chronic diseases need hospital services, services from GPs, and municipal health services. We expose them to many different healthcare professionals. Lately, they are offered telecare services from home. This chapter scrutinizes implementation of telecare services as a technologically driven innovation among healthcare professionals. The chapter discusses different ideas of good care presented at a workshop based on 17 interviews, observations, photos and logbooks. We present three professional groups’ care ethics in terms of ideas and practices of what is the good life as a citizen suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). We discuss the workshop as a learning event founded on the symbolic interactionist idea of learning as reflexism. That is, the process where participants make their joint lines of action an object of attention in order to adjust them (Blumer, 2005; Mead, 1967). In terms of this, we explore not only how people, but also how objects such as measurements, applications, gold standards, money and self-treatment are actively involved in creating and hampering learning. The contribution of the chapter is to discuss the challenges of collaborative practices in relation to provide ‘care at a distance’ (Pols, 2012). We argue that workshops are useful tools to understand more of how professional actors seek to adapt the technology and fit their lines of conduct across social worlds.
