Abstract

Drawing on the communities-of-practice framework as articulated by Jean Lave and Julian Orr, this article examines online communities of gig laborers as critical yet understudied sites of collective knowledge production in the digital economy. The article demonstrates the enduring importance of occupational communities by showing how laborers on Chinese ride- hailing platforms form communities to engage in the production and sharing of licit and illicit knowledge.
