Flygtninge- og indvandrertolkes arbejdsvilkår: Belyst via en gennemgang af litteraturen på området samt interviewundersøgelse af kosovo-albanske tolke på et Røde Kors Center

The purpose of this thesis has been to examine the working conditions of refugee and immigrant interpreters. This has partly been done through a review of the literature concerning interpreter assistance, partly through interviews with 12 Kosovo-Albanian interpreters working at a Danish Red Cross Center.

From the literature as well as the interviews it has turned out that the job as an interpreter makes a lot of different demands on the interpreter. Besides, the job is often associated with a great deal of mental strain for the individual. This is especially the case when the interpreter is a refugee himself, and as such has been exposed to traumatic events. Generally, there is a tendency to underestimate the work of interpreters, whereby many interpreters feel a lack of respect for and recognition of their work. They are seldom prepared for the job, and have few, if any, possibilities for supervision and education.
Interpretation for refugees and immigrants seems to be an area of low priority.

Generally, the working conditions are very poor. In addition many interpreters do not feel sufficiently prepared for the job because of a lack of supervision, training, and education.
