Abstract
The chapter delves into the relevant literature across multiple disciplines, including sociology and economics, and emphasizes methodological advancements in measuring and quantifying the impact of field of study choices. It outlines the theoretical framework for why labor market outcomes differ between graduates from different fields and examines the role of field of study choice as a process of horizontal differentiation that may exacerbate labor market inequality. The authors also review methods for identifying causal effects of fields of study and discuss the methodological challenges in measuring fields of study in applied quantitative work. Additionally, the chapter presents an applied example using recent Norwegian administrative data and concludes with a summary of key developments and potential directions for future research.
