Endoscopic third ventriculostomy - an efficient treatment of hydromyelia

Abstract. In a patient with myelomeningocele (MMC) and hydrocephalus, hydromyelia can be treated with endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). A child with lumbar MMC, Chiari malformation type II and hydrocephalus was initially treated with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Hydromyelia involving the entire spinal cord was present. At the age of 5 yr, shunt dysfunction was treated with an ETV and the ventriculoperitoneal shunt was removed. After ETV, the hydromyelia regressed in the following year. In patients with MMC, ETV seems to be a possible treatment for both hydrocephalus and hydromyelia.
