'Do I develop intercultural competence from study abroad program in China?': An analysis of CFL student experiences at one Danish University

Publikation: KonferencebidragPosterFormidling

Intercultural competence is one of the hot topics on study abroad program in European countries. Much is yet to be known about how students develop their intercultural competence through study abroad program. In this talk, I explore how Chinese as foreign language (CFL) students at one Danish university perceived their experiences on the ’cultural trips ( 文化之旅)’, in which it aimed for developing and enhancing intercultural competence during a six-month stay in China. Drawing on an analysis of students’ reflective reports, my study shows that the development of intercultural competence is a not a linear progress; nor is a one-directional process, setback occurs on a constant basis. CFL students view on the ’cultural trips’ suggests that participation in it foster students’ critical thinking and experiences in the trips could help them develop a sophisticated understanding of what intercultural competency really entails.
