Abstract

This paper responds to some of the fears regarding the future of lexicography. By referring to a number of paradigm shifts in the history of lexicography, some of the innovative endeavours currently occurring in lexicography and a number of exciting future possibilities, the paper tries to show that there is hope for a bright lexicographical future. This paper maintains the division of lexicography into two components, namely dictionography and glossography and places special emphasis on glossography and the role of glosses. It is shown that glosses played a significant role in the early phases of lexicography and have re-emerged in the digital era where their use leads to innovative lexicographical procedures. It is argued that new challenges demand new ways of thinking about lexicography.
