Abstract

A growing variety and number of sensor-based technologies are finding their way into modern cow barns, with the intention of being helpful in dairy herd management. Technical failure, short life of the battery, and hardware failures and unfriendly interfaces or lack of integration with other instruments are among the challenges that are associated with new technologies. For those reasons, missing data is inevitable to occur, and it is one of the most common issues when working with datasets obtained from automatic milking systems (AMS) and auxiliary sensors in dairy farming. This work focuses on the description of the quality and reliability of two different sensor technologies using missing values detection. We present different data visualization techniques for detecting instrumental errors using data collected from two sensor technologies, an AMS and an auxiliary sensor on body condition scoring (BCS), in the dairy herd at the Norwegian University of Life sciences. The results show that identification and visualization of missing values could be helpful for end users of the sensors explored. Tools giving simple “traffic lights” like indications and sending these onto cell phones may be especially useful.
