Abstract
Creativity and innovation competences are strongly in demand in highly developed knowledge societies. Schools are encouraged to pay more attention to the development of such competences. Unfortunately, there is a false notion that academic knowledge competences cannot exist side by side with creative competences. The argument in this article is that academic knowledge and creativity
form a complementary relation; furthermore, it will explain what such an understanding means to curriculum development in school and teacher education.
