Abstract

The notion of 'grand challenges'-that is, large and complex problems facing humankind, such as climate change, decreased biodiversity, poverty, and inequality-has emerged as a key concern in various fields of management and organization studies. In this chapter, we discuss the role of governance, and specifically corporate governance, in causing and tackling grand societal challenges. We identify two perspectives on governance of grand societal challenges in the growing body of knowledge: an organization-centric perspective that puts business organizations at the center, and a problem-centric perspective, which takes problems as a starting point. These perspectives differ fundamentally with respect to their assumptions, research foci, and implications. We aim with this chapter to advance our understanding of governing grand challenges, to stimulate future research within and across the two perspectives, and to provide insights for practicing managers and policymakers.
