Corporate Governance and Grand Societal Challenges

The notion of ‘grand challenges’—that is, large and complex problems facing humankind, such as climate change, decreased biodiversity, poverty, and inequality—has emerged as a key concern in various areas of management and organization studies. In this chapter, we discuss the role of governance, and specifically corporate governance, in causing and tackling grand challenges. We identify two perspectives on governance of grand challenges in the growing body of knowledge: an organization-centric perspective that puts business organizations at the center and a problem-centric perspective that takes the problems as starting point. These perspectives differ fundamentally with respect to their assumptions, research foci, and implications. We hope that this chapter advances our understanding about the governance of grand challenges, stimulates future research within and across the two perspectives, and provides insights for practicing managers and policy-makers.
