Abstract

This chapter presents the broad field of the cognitive science of religion. Specifying the relation of cognitive science to early foundational works in the study of religion, it discusses recent theories and findings based on cognitive approaches to religion under two main headings: religious beliefs and religious practices. Finally, the chapter addresses the relation between experimental approaches and more traditional methods in the scientific study of religion.
