Clinging to the city and the world: the tag as a living line

Publikation: Bidrag til tidsskrift/Konferencebidrag i tidsskrift /Bidrag til avisTidsskriftartikelForskningpeer review

This paper is an exploration of the tag as line. The empirical starting point is the smallest of graffiti, the tag, while the theoretical approach is linealogy, the study of lines. Easy to overlook in the city, tags also seem to be an unnoticed phenomenon within linguistic landscape research. The empirical material analysed in this paper has been gathered through phenomenological fieldwalking, during which several tags in Berlin and Copenhagen have been followed over a period of five years. The paper focuses on one of the Berlin tags in asking how we can understand the tag as line and what that might teach us about movements in the city. Through a linealogical analysis, the paper offers an understanding of the tag as a textured trace of clinging to and, thereby, tying together both city and world.
