Breaking Routines: What causes us to shift gears towards innovation?

Publikation: KonferencebidragPaperForskningpeer review

On some level, innovation begins when the current way of doing things is questioned and alternatives are sought. In cognitive terms, this can be conceptualized as the point at which an agent breaks with existing routine and returns to planning and decision-making. Thus far, however, very little is known about this cognitive structure or the factors that trigger the search for alternatives. In cooperation with the Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, we are in the process of designing an experimental study designed to gain insights into the triggers of such cognitive shifts. Specifically, we intend to challenge individuals' learned routines in a controlled environment while observing changes in brain activities via MMR scans. The intention with this workshop is to discuss the experimental design and to gather input from other researchers who have conducted similar studies, or have interest in this type of research design.
