Abstract

The concept of the public sphere is central to the analysis of modern American society. It provides an example of social negotiation processes regarding democratic participation, political decision-making and the technological foundations of public communication. This article deals with the media and infrastructures of this public sphere in the USA since the 19th century in relation to journalism and social media of the present. The first part explains the initial phase of the mass press as a fundamental constellation of the journalistic public sphere, which has fallen into a fundamental crisis with the advent of the Internet and social media since the beginning of the 2000s. The second part then discusses the problematic nature of social media, which see themselves as neutral platforms for mediating communication between individual users, but at the same time create an algorithm- and data-based infrastructure of the digital public sphere in which journalism is only one actor among many.
