Abstract

In this article we discuss the situated ethics of researching the everyday lives of children and families. Research conducted in close collaboration with research participants in everyday contexts presents the researcher with multiple ethical dilemmas involving doubts, uncertainties, and often, discomfort and conflicting emotions, and opportunities for action. However, the literature on ethics often focuses primarily on procedures, for example, for obtaining informed consent, preventing harm, and ensuring anonymity. Although such procedures form an important background for reflections on ethics, they address only limited aspects of ethical concerns in research, and often fall short in terms of guiding the researcher to make decisions regarding ethical concerns in concrete situations during the various stages of the research. We present examples of how reflecting on the connections between ethical commitments, research ambitions, and theoretical standpoints may guide reflection and decisions on ethical dilemmas throughout the research process. We draw on examples from our research on children and parents’ everyday lives, taking social practice theory and the concept of the “co-researching” as our points of departure. These examples form a backdrop for analyzing how, on the one hand, ethical commitments are necessary throughout the research process, and, on the other hand, how these also, and concurrently, change and develop when confronted with situated ethical dilemmas.
