Abstract

This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of research methodologies employed over the past decade to investigate how designers engage digital tools in the management of their daily creative ideas. Drawing on fundamental concepts from Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and digital creativity (Inie & Dalsgaard, 2017, 2020; Pedersen et al., 2018), we explore the existing landscape of research on the utilization of digital tools in the realm of idea management within creative work of designers. The predominant focus in the literature has been on methodologies such as interviews, surveys and ethnographic approaches (Inie & Dalsgaard, 2020; Del Turco & Dalsgaard 2023), with a comparatively smaller number of studies adopting experimental methods (Fritch et al, 2021). Emphasizing the necessity for a robust methodological framework, we advocate for the longitudinal examination of how digital tools could either facilitate or hinder the emergence and development of creative ideas.
