A 4D Cross-Borehole Direct Current Resistivity System for Monitoring In-Situ Groundwater Remediation

Abstract

In-situ groundwater remediation without amendment distribution knowledge may result in an ineffective clean-up endeavor. Cross-borehole direct current (DC) resistivity imaging can provide a time-lapse 3D (i.e., 4D) conductivity distribution and deliberate the anomaly volume caused by the introduction of remediation agents. However, existing DC systems are not capable of measuring million-scale quadrupoles efficiently to create 4D images and guide remediation. We have developed a highly efficient cross-borehole DC system that provides 4D images with high resolution throughout the remediation zone. The system consists of a transmitter box and a number of receivers boxes. All the boxes communicate via a mesh-topology wireless network and synchronized by GPS-disciplined clock. The system automatically performs the electrodes switch and measurements according to protocols. Remote access and wake-up capability facilitate time-lapse measurements. Recorded data is processed locally and apparent resistivity is transferred to cloud for inversion and interpretation. A 12m by 20m test site with 18 DC boreholes was built for system verification. With the developed instrument, 172,032 quadrupoles were acquired in only 8~hours. Three datasets collected before and after injections are inverted to time-lapse 3D images and clearly delineate the amendment zone, which validates the system.
