Abstract
The extent to which anti-foreigner sentiment applies to all immigrants, irrespective of their social characteristics, has not been studied to a sufficient degree. Accordingly, the present study aims to examine the significance of specific immigrant attributes by utilizing social identity theory and realistic group conflict theory. Empirical analyses confirm the relevance of the two theories, as they show that: (1) anti-foreigner sentiment is lower toward Western immigrants than toward non-Western immigrants, and (2) anti-foreigner sentiment is lower toward high-skilled immigrants than toward low-skilled immigrants. Anti-foreigner sentiment reflects both ethnic-cultural antipathy and economic interests, which are in turn interrelated. Accordingly, this study claims that social identity theory and realistic group conflict theory are complementary. Final analyses show that attitudes toward the characteristics of immigrants are formed independently of social status. Collective identities and interests are important components of anti-foreigner sentiment. Analyses were based on a randomized survey experiment fielded in 2020 (N = 884).
