The overall objective of the first phase of the PhysCAM project (2007-2009) has been to improve aquaculture productivity in the Mekong delta region through physiological studies of relevant animal and plant species and to train industry advisors. This first phase has focussed on studying how salinity, dissolved oxygen and pesticides affect fish and crustacean growth and on the study of the extent to which local plant species are suitable for the removal of nutrients in aquaculture effluent. During the first phase a well-equipped physiology laboratory has been established at Can Tho University allowing for investigation of the respiratory physiology and osmoregulatory capabilities of local species of interest in aquaculture, growth tanks using water exchange (rather than re-circulation) and pilot hydroponic systems to study the uptake of nitrogenous compounds by plants.
