Beskrivelse

As part of a long term project studying Maya ritual practices in the highlands of Guatemala, John McGraw interviewed twenty-five ritual specialists, known as ajq’ijaa’, using a questionnaire designed in collaboration with Uffe Schjødt. The two are attempting to quantify typical patterns of practice in the use of la vara, a ritual object of great importance for the ajq’ijaa’. Among other things, this object is required for the performance of a prominent divinatory ritual practiced by ajq’ijaa’ (and detailed in McGraw’s doctoral thesis). Utilizing a comparative perspective, the hope is to better understand a set of regularities in indigenous ritual practices which, on the whole, eschew orthodoxy and demonstrate strong variability.
