Beskrivelse

The aim of the project is to develop and implement genomic selection (GS) as a tool in breeding programs of wheat at Lantmännen. GS consists of a combination of advanced genomics, phenotyping, genotyping of relevant lines in the breeding program using a dense set of genetic markers combined with the use of advanced and computer intensive biometric methods. GS can increase the
overall effect of the breeding program, the years from the first crosses to marketing of new varieties can be reduced, and the overall costs of the breeding program can be reduced through reductions in the number of field plots. Introduction of GS in wheat breeding is expected to accelerate the genetic gains in the breeding program, and thus have a major positive effect on yield, disease resistance, and product quality. The project team consists of Lantmännen as the commercial partner, with extensive expertise in wheat breeding and commercial seed sales, and the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Aarhus University in Denmark, with experience in molecular genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, and genomic selection in crop plants
