The aim of my PhD project is genomic characterization of the small, local dairy population of Icelandic Cattle, assessment of feasibility of genomic selection in the population, and the development of breeding schemes for small dairy cattle populations.

Icelandic Cattle are genomically distinct from other Northern European breeds, most related to Norwegian and Finnish breeds. Icelandic Cattle are essentially an unadmixed population, and inbreeding rates are similar to what is observed in other commercial dairy cattle populations. A validation study of prediction accuracies suggest that genomic selection methods are feasible for the population.
