Fleshworks: The Erotic Economy of Settler Colonialism in the Ecuadorian Amazon

The project examined the effect of wage-labour on the relations between settlers and indigenous Shuar people in the Morona-Santiago Province of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Two fieldworks focused on the architecture and construction industry and on the cosmetic and fitness sectors.

Economic change can help explain political and aesthetic transformations better than a focus on culture or on (de)colonialism. Shuar and settler societies have experienced different sorts of relations to capitalism and as a result have transformed in different but related ways. Indigenous and LGBT activism are primarily about economic factors.
