Negative stadtmetaphern

Publikation: Bidrag til tidsskrift/Konferencebidrag i tidsskrift /Bidrag til avisTidsskriftartikelForskningpeer review

In literary studies metaphors are often regarded as purely verbal phenomena, whereas cognitive semantics takes metaphors to be mental processes independent of the medium in which they are manifested. In contrast to these approaches, the present contribution understands metaphor as being shaped by the way in which a given medium articulates relations of similarity. In addition, metaphor is treated as a pragmatic, i.e. context-dependent and dialogic, phenomenon and not as a purely logical one. On the basis of this approach it is asked how and why negation in metaphors does not eliminate the metaphorical process, but constitutes a specific way of supporting it, suitable for the semiotization of dynamic cultural phenomena such as the modern metropolis.
