I hold a PhD and a DEA in Contemporary History from the University of Valencia (2013, 2009), and a degree in History from the University of Valladolid (2006), where I took additional studies in Art History (2000-2002). Before coming to Aarhus University I worked as project officer and consultant for the European Observatory on Memories (2014/2015).

I am interested in Memory Studies, Cultural Studies and Theory, Postcolonial and Decolonial Studies and Gender Studies. At present I deal with the public uses of colonial past and the ways in which the memory of violent past is constructed and transmitted within the European and the colonized societies.

Currently, I am working in a postdoctoral research project co-funded by the DFF (Danish Council for Independent Research), the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research and the Aarhus University. The project analyses new narratives about the colonial past, specifically the Spanish imperial past in Africa compared to the cultural memories of the Spanish Civil War and Franco’s dictatorship. I combine the fields of memory studies and postcolonial theory in order to examine how intellectuals come to terms with colonial past and how this past interacts with global narratives of violence and victims. As a historian I study the interaction between texts and contexts on the basis of the discursively mediated character of experience.

In my teaching I am interested in exploring how the racialized, gendered, classed 'Other' is constructed through discourse and power relations in different contexts and how these processes of identification intersect. I am concerned with how the 'Other' is produced (and become different) through processes of discrimination.
