Prevalence And Characteristics Of Image-Stitching Artefacts In CCD-Based Cephalograms Of Orthodontic Patients

AimTo assess the presence and severity of image-stitching artefacts (i.e. horizontal stitching lines) in cephalograms acquiredfrom patients using CCD-based image sensors.Material and methodsCephalograms from 200 consecutive patients (84 male/116 female, mean age 21 years), using two Promax 2D units wereincluded. One hundred images were acquired using a Dimax-3 (D-3), and 100 using a Dimax-4 (D-4) sensor. The exposureparameters were set patient-wise, providing optimal image acquisition setup. Three trained and calibrated observersassessed the presence of image-stitching artefacts according to line extension (one-third/two-thirds/complete),visibility (almost invisible/thin/thin with vertical stripes/thick), contrast differences on each side of the horizontal line(yes/no), misalignment between the anatomical structure display on each side of the line (none/<1 mm/1-3 mm/>3 mm), and interference with orthodontic landmarks (yes/no). Descriptive statistics summarized the findings.ResultsStitching-lines were observed in on average 4% of D-4 images, mostly as a thin line (3%) with no contrast change, andmisalignment present in 2% of the cases. In D-3, stitching-lines were observed in 99% of the images (thin line in 75%),extending through the whole image in 84%. Vertical stripes were seen in 11% of images. Contrast change related to thestitching-line was observed in 28% (not seen in D-4). Misalignment was observed in 66% of the images (42% <1 mm,17% 1-3 mm, 7% >3 mm). Interference with orthodontic landmarks was observed in 15% (none in D-4).ConclusionThe image sensor type has substantial effect on the presence and severity of image-stitching artefacts in CCD-basedcephalograms.
