Attachments and the Moral Psychology of Value Conflicts

Publikation: Bidrag til bog/antologi/rapport/proceedingBidrag til bog/antologiForskningpeer review

I explain the way in which values, i.e., pretty immaterial things, can come into real conflict and can in fact generate conflicts that are more serious and difficult to resolve than other types of conflicts. In my explanation, I avail myself of the notion of an attachment as a persistent and pervading form of valuing. Our attachments, I argue, shape our affections, cognitions, volitions and identity. Conflicts of value represent threats to our attachments and thereby to our identity and the way we experience the world. Hence their gravity and difficulty.
