Leder det Neurodegenerative forskningslaboratorie på IMB (http://www.neurodegeneration.au.dk)som fokuserer på molekylære mekanismer ved parkinsonistiske sygdomme og demens. Gruppen omfatter aktuelt 1 professor, 1 post doc., 4 Ph.D. studerende, 1 prægraduate specialestuderende og 2 laboranter og har hidtil gradueret 5 PhD kandidater og 8 specialestuderende.

Forskningsformidling: Publiceret 70 originalarbejder og 11 oversigtsartikler. Priser; Guldmedalje for prisopgave ved AU 1986. Dr. Med. 1997 ved AU på afhandlingen ”Structure and Function of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-2. An intracellular serine proteinase inhibitor modulating apoptosis”; Alzheimer prisen 2010 fra Dansk Alzheimer Forening.

Etablerede i 1994 forskningslaboratoriet for Molekylær Neurodegenerativ forskning med interesse for Parkinson sydom og demens. Gruppen har udnyttet den store viden opnået gennem klinisk genetiske patientstudier og det humane genomprojekt til at fokusere på nøgle molekyler i de neurodegenerative processer. Specielt arbejdet med proteinet a-synuclein har ført til at vi har opnået en prominent rolle i den molekylære Parkinson forskning. Det har bl.a. ført til invitation som rådgiver ved Michael J Fox Fondens a-synuclein summit Jan. 2010 og Synuclein Imaging Workshop Nov. 2010 og som medorganisator af årlige workshops om alfa-synuclein siden 2007 i Adelaide, 2008 i Lausanne, 2009 Beijing og 2010 San Diego og i 2011 på Naxos i Grækenland. Desuden deltaget ved talrige videnskabelige møder og kongresser, heraf oftest som invited speaker, flere gange som chairman, organisator af symposier bl.a. i 2009 Alfred Benzon symposiet, Functional and Pathogenic Protein Aggregation. Forelæst på Lundbeck A/S, Neurosearch A/S, NsGene A/S, Novo A/S, Boehringer Ingelheim Gmbh, Elan. Afholdt seminarer ved universiteter i Norge, Sverige, Svejts, Frankrig, Tyskland, England, USA, Japan, Kina, Australien. Indleveret 3 patentansøgninger. Bestyrelsesmedlem ved Arne Hansens legat (2005-2008) samt Dansk Neuroforskningscenter, som er et initiativ mellem Århus Universitetshospital og Aarhus Universitet. Gruppen deltager i en række nationale og internationale forskningssamrabejder omkring udvikling af nye sygdomsmodeller, identifikation af nye sygdomsmarkører samt udvikling af nye reagenser – alle med det mål at udvikle behandlingsformer som kan stoppe eller hæmme udviklingen af Parkinson’s sygdom og demens. Samarbejderne omfatter flere initiativer støttet af Michael J Fox fonden, Nordisk Center of Excellence in Molekylær Neurodegenerativ Forskning, innovationskonsortiet CureND, det EU støttede integrerede træningsnetværk Neurasync og gruppen har modtaget afgørende og vedholdende støtte fra bl.a. Lundbeckfonden.
